Branch Administrator/Organiser, University of Kent UCU (part time, 0.2)

Salary: £6,430 pa. (£32,151 p.a. pro rata)

The University of Kent UCU branch, in Canterbury, is seeking to appoint someone to assist with managing its office, with minimal supervision. The successful candidate will work 7 hours per week.
 
You will develop and implement a recruitment strategy, undertake organising activities, keep the branch website up-to-date, and take minutes. With sound organisational, communication and interpersonal skills, you will have knowledge of the implications of working for a trade union or other not-for-profit organisation, be the first point of contact for members and be expected to support the branch officers in all aspects of your work for UCU.

Regional Support Official - Scotland (fixed-term 12 months in the first instance)

Salary: £48,201 pa.
                                            
We are looking for a regional support official for Scotland, based in our Glasgow office. The post will be required from October 2019 and will last a minimum of 12 months.   

The main purpose of the regional support official is to provide advice and support to local branches with individual representation and collective bargaining. Duties also include providing training, assisting with recruitment and organisation and representing the union to employer, funding and government bodies. The postholder will also assist in ensuring the consistent implementation of UCU's bargaining, campaigning and organising objectives.    

You will need knowledge of the post-compulsory education sector; knowledge of bargaining with employers and experience of trade union organising and representing individuals in disciplinary and grievance cases, etc. With good inter-personal, negotiating and advocacy skills, you will also be committed to equality and diversity issues and able and willing to travel within Scotland (car provided).

Press Officer (London)

£41,415 pa. (including LW)

UCU is looking for someone to play an exciting role in our award-winning policy and campaigns team in promoting the image, aims and objectives of UCU to the media.

Duties include advising on the promotion of UCU to its members and developing and maintaining relationships with media outlets.  As well as writing press releases, researching briefing notes, articles and other materials, you will monitor media coverage of UCU and respond to press and media enquiries.

With a knowledge of UK media, the ability to pull together research under tight deadlines, experience of using social media and a passion for and knowledge of further and higher education, you will have an excellent command of written English and experience of writing clear, concise copy. You will also need to demonstrate your ability to handle communications with journalists effectively.

Caseworker (London)

Salary: £47,223 pa. (including LW)

UCU is looking for a caseworker for London.

Based in NW1, you will advise and represent UCU members on employment problems and disputes, in line with UCU procedure. Working within a trade union context, you will represent members at hearings and prepare relevant casework training material. Ensuring the effective administration of casework will also form part of your duties and you will be required to travel.

Key skills required:

  • educated to GCSE level or equivalent (including maths and English)
  • knowledge of UK employment and equality law
  • three years or more experience of handling personal casework matters
  • experience of advocacy and representation at hearings
  • strong interpersonal skills
  • excellent problem-solving skills.
